Glossary

Welcome to the glossary. Here I will give a short explanation of any technical words used in my posts. These words will be linked to this page so that, should you need a quick reference as to what certain terms mean, its here.

Motherboard
A motherboard is the central printed circuit board (PCB) in modern computers and holds many of the crucial components of the system, providing connectors for other peripherals. The motherboard is sometimes alternatively known as the mainboard, system board, or, on Apple computers, the logic board.

RAM
RAM is short for Random access memory, this is the memory the system uses to run programs and use input data and create output data. The more RAM a system has, the faster it can respond to the user and complete a given task.

DIMM Channels
DIMM Channels are the sockets on the motherboard that RAM Chips connect to. They act as an interface between the motherboard and the RAM. There are several different types of DIMM Channel each dictating a maximum data throughput.

CPU
CPU is short for Central Processing Unit which is often simply called the systems processor. This is the small micro processing chip that forms the very heart of the system.

HDD
HDD is shorthand for Hard Disk Drive

Hard Disk Drive or Hard Drive
A systems Hard Disk Drive or Hard Drive is its permanent memory cache. Data from the system is burned into a disk, creating a tangible copy of the data. For this reason, power can be cut from the Hard Drive without data being lost.
